Finding somewhere for a big group get together can be difficult. You’ve got to consider space, location, availability, price, fussy eaters, vegetarians, teetotallers, the after party goers and the early leavers. Whether it’s a birthday party or work function, the fact of the matter is that no one wants to be the one who has to organise it.
Well, if you’re the one who’s been landed with the dreaded job, stress no more! I have found the perfect place for all occasions. Devonshire Terrace, the all-day bar and restaurant owned by London’s culinary giants Drake & Morgan, is the ultimate spot for hosting group events! And I’ll show you why…
Drake & Morgan’s collection of beautifully presented and extremely spacious bars and restaurants have been taking London by storm over the last few years, with 18 unique establishments now open all across the capital. Each location boasts its own unique decor, but with a running theme of luxurious elegance and exquisite attention to detail.
The newly refurbished Devonshire Terrace is their branch located just minutes away from Liverpool Street Station and is an enchanting place to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy city. Last week I stopped by to try their new Spring/Summer 2018 menus with a group of other bloggers.
From the moment I approached the restaurant, I immediately fell in love with the beautiful outdoor terrace covered in plants and dainty little fairy lights. I don’t get to spend a lot of time around this part of the city, but immediately I knew I’d be back for some al fresco drinks this summer.
We started the evening with a mixology class where we were able to try our hand at producing one of Drake & Morgan’s signature ‘Botanical Blend’ cocktails ourselves.
The cocktail we made was the Yoga Mat & Cha – a unique blend of spit-roasted pineapple gin, yoghurt, almond milk, honey green tea, baking soda, lemon, sage and hazelnut.
I must admit when I saw these unusual ingredients placed around the table I was rather apprehensive, but after measuring them out one by one and giving them a good mix in the cocktail shaker, I was pleasantly surprised with what we produced.
A fun and rewarding way to begin the evening and break the ice with my fellow dinner guests.
Next, we moved into one of the private dining areas in the restaurant, where a beautifully set table surrounded by faux fur covered chairs was awaiting us.
Straight away the prosecco was poured and the waiting staff walked around the table with canapés, including some delicious little potato croquettes (I may have accidentally filled myself up on these!). There were also plates of bread and olives lining the table to keep us going until the meal began.
Our menus were presented as scrolls on each of our plates, adding to the fairytale-esque environment.
Starters included chicken wings, avocado hummus, ricotta bruschetta, chorizo scotch egg and salt and pepper squid, as well as several other options. Seeing that the chicken wings came with a maple, ale and chilli glaze, I immediately made my choice, and was pleasantly surprised at the large portion I was brought out.
For main course, Devonshire Terrace has an extensive menu of dishes including burgers, steaks, fish and chips, grilled poussin, bangers and mash, roast lamb rump, tortellini and plenty more.
And for those thinking about their summer bod, new for spring/summer 2018 is an inventive selection of salads courtesy of chef, restaurateur and food writer Peter Gordon, which includes baby beetroot with broad beans, goat’s curd and hazelnuts; kohlrabi with watermelon, tofu, mangetout and candied walnuts; and roast cauliflower with seeds, olives, broad beans, peas and olive tapenade.
The menu was so broad and diverse that it truly had something for everyone, no matter how fussy!
Dessert featured crème brûlée, chocolate brownie and a salted caramel plum sundae. However, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous you can always take your dessert in liquid form. Devonshire Terrace’s creative ‘sweet sips’ menu includes an espresso martini, crème brûlée martini, choc brownie martini and after eight martini. A fun and delicious way to end the evening!
