The UK isn’t a nation particularly known for our world-class cuisine, and I think it’s pretty safe to say that much the best food you’ll find in London usually comes from elsewhere in the world. But if there’s one thing us Brits know how to do right, it’s a classic Sunday roast.

While it’s hard to beat a proper home-cooked roast dinner, there are a few restaurants in London that have made a pretty great attempt. So to help you figure out where to get your weekend fill when you don’t feel like cooking at home, this is where you’ll find the best Sunday roasts in London…

The best Sunday roast in London for: serious meat lovers.

While high-end British steakhouse Hawksmoor is well-known for dishing up some of the most delicious cuts of steaks in the whole of London, what many people don’t realise is that the chains several elegant restaurants also serve one of the best Sunday lunches in London.

What? Slow roast rump is served with beef dripping roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, carrots, greens, roasted shallots & garlic and lashings of bone marrow and onion gravy.

Where? Spitalfields, Soho, Covent Garden, Borough, City & Knightsbridge.

Blacklock

The best Sunday roast in London for: huge filling portions and top-notch gravy.

Blacklock’s owner Gordon Ker was quoted as saying “Nothing beats your mum’s Sunday dinner, so we aim to be the next best thing”, and the popular London steak and chophouse has achieved just that.

Head to the original Blacklock in Soho where you’ll eat downstairs in the basement of an old brothel. Enjoy huge plates of succulent meat with all the trimmings and topped with what many claim to be the best gravy in the city. One of the tastiest and best value Sunday roasts in London.

Blacklock also has one of the best drinks menus in central London, with their ‘cocktails for a fiver’, a selection of wines on tap and a menu page dedicated to juicy reds which are perfect for pairing.

What? A choice of 55 day aged beef rump, Cornish lamb leg or Middlewhite pork loin roasted over open coals and English oak, served with duck-fat roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, a selection of roaster vegetables and Blacklock gravy.

Where? Soho & Shoreditch (there’s also a branch in the City but it doesn’t open Sundays).

How much? £18 for one type of meat, £20 for all three (2 people minimum).

Restaurant 12:51

The best Sunday roast in London for: a special occasion and unique flavours.

For those who don’t mind swapping quantity for quality, 12:51 by renowned British Chef James Cochran serves one of the fanciest roast dinners in London. That’s not to say 12:51’s roast dinner won’t leave you feeling satisfied, with the unbeatable flavours coming from the truffle cauliflower cheese and smoked bone marrow bringing the humble British roast into the realm of fine dining.

What? 60 Day aged sirloin and brisket of Dexter beef, roast potatoes, roast carrots, chargrilled hispi cabbage, yorkshire puddings, truffle cauliflower cheese, smoked bone marrow, horseradish cream and beef gravy.

Where? Islington.

How much? £25 per person (minimum 2 people).

The Harwood Arms

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a delicious roast dinner in the comfort of a cosy British pub, and fortunately, one of London’s best Sunday roasts can be found at the capital’s only Michelin-starred pub, The Harwood Arms.

What? Roast sirloin of 45 day Shorthorn beef with horseradish cream, Berkshire pork chop with Bramley apple sauce, braised shoulder of Aynhoe Park roe deer (2 people minimum) or a truffled nut roast with honey and mustard glaze, all served with a yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, root vegetables, gravy and greens.

The Camberwell Arms

This unsuspecting independent pub and restaurant in Camberwell serves up not just the best Sunday roast in south London but one of the best in the whole of the capital, even picking up a number of different awards for their roasts over the years.

What? Beef, ale & marrow pie with potato & shallot gratin and roast hispi cabbage, half a spit roast chicken, charred gem, anchoiade, sage and lemon roast potatoes, roast pork belly, charred catalogna chicory, datterini tomatoes and aioli, or rump steak, horseradish butter, watercress, sage and lemon potatoes.

Where? Camberwell.

How much? Between £32-52.50 (for 2 to share).

 

The Royal Oak

The best Sunday roast in London for: a tasty and affordable post-Colombia flower market lunch.

The Royal Oak is located right in the heart of Colombia Road, making it the perfect spot to spot for a Sunday lunch after a morning exploring the streets bustling Sunday flower market. The charming Victorian pub has also been featured in a number of films and TV shows thanks to its dated features.

Claiming ‘rockin’ roasts that match your nans’, The Royal Oak serves a tasty no-nonsense British Sunday lunch with a couple of quirky extras such as maple roasted pumpkin and sauteed brussel tops to give it that much-loved East London flair.

What? Rolled roast chicken, roasted drums, sage and onion stuffing and bread sauce, 21 day aged dry roast striploin with horseradish creme or a beetroot, fennel and mixed nut roast, all served with goose fat roast potatoes, crushed butternut squash, creamed peas, leeks and bacon, maple roasted pumpkin, sauteed brussel tops, double egg yorkshire pudding and gravy.
