Florentine is a new all-day restaurant and bar in London’s Waterloo. It is located opposite Lambeth North tube station but is also easily walkable from both Waterloo and Westminster stations. They serve a Brasserie-style menu featuring fresh seasonal ingredients, from the classic Eggs Florentine (£7) to a 35 day aged rib of beef Sunday roast (£17). The bar also prides itself on serving British bubbles by the bottle (£49+).

After opening on 27th March this year, Florentine is already pulling in Londoners with one particularly unique selling point… it’s signature sharing ostrich egg breakfast.

The dish is made to serve 4 people and costs £65. It includes streaky bacon, Cumberland sausages, Portobello mushrooms, tomato, bakes beans and bread, surrounding one giant ostrich egg.

Review:

Arriving at Florentine on a Sunday morning with a group of very hungry friends, we were informed that the egg would take around 25 minutes to cook. To keep us going before the main meal we ordered a selection of warm croissants and pain au chocolates (£2 each) to accompany our glasses of Chapel Down (I’ve never tried British bubbles before but now I would definitely recommend!).

From our seats, we could see the egg being cracked in the kitchen which was a nice touch. When it arrived, even after seeing pictures beforehand, we were truly shocked at how large the egg was. There was plenty to go around and they even boxed up the rest for us to take home when we failed to eat the whole thing. I’m not too sure what day old ostrich egg will be like but we shall see tomorrow morning I suppose!

We had a great experience at Florentine Waterloo. The restaurant itself was simple and elegant, the staff were extremely attentive and looked after us well, and getting to try ostrich egg for the first time was a fun Sunday morning treat.

The signature ostrich egg breakfast accompanied by a bottle of British bubbles would cost £114 for a group of 4 (£28.50pp). For a filling and tasty meal in an elegant setting Florentine is great value for money.
